Smoking is a habit that many find unappealing, and for some, it’s a dealbreaker in relationships. Recently, a woman turned to social media to share her frustration and embarrassment over her partner’s bad habits and poor hygiene, sparking a lively discussion online.

The Backstory

The woman explained that when she first started dating her boyfriend a year ago, his smoking didn’t bother her. According to The Mirror, she had dated a smoker before but didn’t mind because he maintained excellent oral hygiene.

However, her current boyfriend’s smoking habit has become unbearable due to his poor dental care. Posting on Mumsnet, she wrote, “I absolutely hate smoking now. He stinks all the time. I refuse to kiss him. I hate being in the car with him when he talks. I don’t mind smokers’ breath—it’s the fact he doesn’t clean his teeth/mouth well enough, and it becomes horrendous.”

She also pointed out that his diet makes matters worse. Instead of drinking water, he prefers sugary drinks, which exacerbate the problem. “He’s 28 with only four back teeth, and they’re all black and tiny. He constantly gets fillings and toothaches. I’ve never seen teeth like his before,” she added.

A Lack of Understanding

Her boyfriend, however, doesn’t see the issue. He can’t understand why she won’t kiss him anymore. She admitted, “So many times, his oral hygiene isn’t good enough.”

She also revealed that his toothbrush never moves from its spot because he doesn’t brush his teeth regularly. Mortified by his hygiene and how it reflects on her, she shared, “His ex was the same. She smoked all the time and had black teeth, just like him.”

Feeling too embarrassed to talk to her friends about it, she turned to Mumsnet for advice, confessing, “I can’t stand it, and I don’t know what to do.”

The Reaction

Her post quickly drew attention on Mumsnet, with many users urging her to end the relationship. One commenter wrote, “Just dump him. Sounds gross. Don’t you want a partner you’re attracted to and want to kiss? I wouldn’t date a smoker.”

Another user pointed out, “That sounds extremely gross. If you can’t cope with it, then get rid of him. His teeth couldn’t have been good from the start.”

A third commenter offered a harsher critique, writing, “This would be a dealbreaker for me. His lack of self-care and respect for you likely reflects in other aspects of his life. Get out now while it’s still easy.”

The consensus was clear: many felt she deserved better and encouraged her to prioritize her happiness and well-being.
